Is Your Fire Risk Assessor Competent?

Welcome to my first blog! It's both exciting and a bit scary to share my thoughts with you. Thank you for taking the time to read it.

I have recently completed the IFSM (Institute of Fire Safety Management) Fire Risk Assessor/Fire Management Certificate Course. During this course, we had an in-depth discussion about the competency of fire risk assessors.

One key takeaway from our discussions was the alarming presence of individuals who offer fire risk assessments at very low prices, yet lack the necessary knowledge and qualifications to conduct them correctly. This negligence poses significant risks to both themselves and businesses like yours.

According to the Regulatory Reform (Fire Safety) Order 2005 , it is imperative that the 'responsible person' either conducts a fire risk assessment or appoints a competent individual to perform this task for non-domestic businesses.

Many businesses are now opting to hire fire risk assessors, as they feel inadequately equipped to handle this critical responsibility themselves. They want to avoid the risk of prosecution from local fire authorities in case of errors.

This approach certainly makes sense!

However, the issue remains that some fire risk assessors may not be sufficiently qualified to carry out a thorough and accurate fire risk assessment. Consequently, numerous businesses have faced legal repercussions, with both the fire risk assessor and the business owner being prosecuted in some cases.
